Thinking about Men’s Make-up through KPOP Idols KPOPアイドルを通して考える男性のメイク

This time we're going to look at men's make-up through K-pop idols!

First of all, let's take a look back at the history of men's makeup. It was used for religious reasons, to show authority and social status, and to protect the skin and eyes.

In Japan, men wore make-up until the Edo period (1603-1868). However, men's make-up was considered unnecessary after the Meiji period (1868-1912) when the roles of men and women were completely divided to promote national wealth and military strength.

In Europe and America, from the '70s, some musicians and rock bands wore make-up (ex David Bowie). Also in Japan, from the '80s, people started to wear flashy make-up, mostly in "visual bands" (ex Buck-Tick).

People tend to think that make-up is not for men, but that's only in the modern era, and it's only for a small period of time in the long history. 
 
In Korea, on the other hand, up until 30 years ago, men's make-up was considered taboo because it was against Confucianism. Even around 1990, it was not accepted to dress flamboyantly. Today, however, the amount of cosmetics purchased by men has increased dramatically in Korea and is the highest in the world.

As KPOP has been promoted as an industry since the 2010s, people have become less uncomfortablemale with idols wearing make-up, and male make-up itself have become more acceptable.

However, make-up seen on KPOP idols is different from the kind seen on rock bands in the past. It's not about looking wild, it's about looking good. Men's make-up as a part of grooming is starting to be accepted in many countries. Now a lot of people think that people should have the right to choose how they look, regardless of their gender, and I think make-up is becoming gender-free.
 
However, some countries are going against the times. I'm sure many of you know about this from the recent news. The Chinese government is trying to get rid of feminine male celebrities from TV.

It seems that there is a tendency to exclude men who wear make-up because they are assumed to be gay and have a negative influence. For example, aside from China, there is the case of the removal of the birthday advertisement of Jungkook in Pakistan too.

As you can see, the way of thinking about make-up has changed a lot over time, and it can be positive or negative depending on the country. Nevertheless, it is clear that more and more people are becoming more open to people who want to look beautiful, regardless of their gender, and I think that's great. And I'm glad to see that my favourite k-pop idols are contributing to this change😊.

今回はKPOPアイドルとの関わりから見る男性のメイクについて考えていきます！

まずは男性のメイクの歴史について振り返ってみます。古代から男性のメイクというものはありました。宗教的な理由や、権威/社会的地位を見せるため、また肌や目を保護するためにもメイクは使われたようです。

17世紀ごろまでヨーロッパの貴族男性は化粧をしていたし、日本でも江戸時代まではメイクをしていて、男性のメイクは不要とされたのは明治以降、富国強兵のため男女の役割を分けるるようになったからです。

欧米では70年代くらいから一部のミュージシャン、ロックバンドなどメイクしている人は少なくありませんでした（ex David Bowie)。また、日本でも80年代からビジュアル系バンド(ex Buck Tick）とか言われるような派手なメイクをする人が出てきました。

『男性はメイクしないものだ』というのが常識だと思われがちですが、それは近代だけで長い歴史の中で見れば一時期の話なんですね。

一方、韓国では30年前までは男の化粧は儒教思想に反していてタブーとされていて、1990年ごろでも派手な格好とか受け入れられていませんでした。ところが今では男性の化粧品購入量が大幅に増え、世界一となっています。

2010年代からKPOPが産業の一つとして推進されてきたこともあって男性アイドルのメイクした姿に違和感がなくなり、男性の化粧が普通に受け入れられるようになってきたのかもしれません。

しかし、KPOPアイドルに見られるメイクはかつてのロックバンドなどに見られるメイクとは種類が違います。ワイルドに見せるメイクではなくきれいに見せるためのメイクです。身だしなみとしての男性のメイクが受け入れられつつある国が多いですよね。また性別に関係なく自分がどう見えるか選ぶ権利があるという考えや、メイクに関してもジェンダーフリーという世の中になりつつあると思います。
 
とはいえ、時代に逆行している国もあります。最近のニュースになっているので知っている方も多いと思います。中国では女性っぽい男性芸能人を排除しようとしています。

メイクしている男性をゲイと決めつけて悪影響があるからといって排除しようとする傾向があるみたいです。例えば、中国以外にもパキスタンではグクのバースデイ広告撤去事件がありました。

このように、時代によってメイクへの考え方は大きく変わっており、国によっても肯定的か否定的かが変わります。それでも、性別に関係なくキレイになりたいという人を受け入れるような人たちが増えているのは確かで、私はそれは素晴らしいことだと思います。また、この変化に私の大好きなkpopアイドルが貢献していると思うと嬉しいです😊
