If you're an ARMY, you know that Jungkook of BTS has a lot of tattoos! This has been a very controversial issue, especially in Japan. Some Korean idols have tattoos, but Jungkook has striking tattoos compared to other idols, which is why there are so many strong reactions...

In this article, I'm going to talk about Jungkook's tattoos and introduce different values of tattoos in the world!

First, let's take a look at the main countries where tattoos are a relatively popular thing. According to a 2013 survey, in the USA, 40% of adults up to the age of 40 have a tattoo. Also in the UK, there are some commercials with a positive look at tattoos. Other countries such as Italy and Australia also seem to have a more tolerant attitude. Some people in these countries never want tattoos or don't think positively of them, depending on their occupations or status, such as white-collar workers. However, these countries are quite tolerant of tattoos compared to Asian countries.

This is not the case in Korea, Japan, and China. In China, tattoos are banned by law, and in Korea and Japan, they are not banned, but only a few people wear anything too obvious. In fact, you see very few people with tattoos on the streets in Japan. In Asia in particular, people tend to associate tattoos with yakuza (gangsters) and other bad people or criminals, so tattoos might be tolerated but never positively accepted. The fact that people with tattoos are not allowed to go into most swimming pools or hot springs in Japan shows our society's attitude towards tattoos.

With this in mind, let's think about Jungkook's tattoos. First of all, although it's my personal experience looking at a lot of reactions on the Internet, I don't see many comments in English on Twitter or YouTube that regret or criticize Jungkook having a tattoo. However, Asian ARMY reacted differently. Some Japanese ARMY started a petition against Jungkook getting a tattoo. There is a big difference in the way people react to his tattoos depending on their original values to tattoos!

 

I understand some people are confused by the sudden change in their idols' appearance and image, but it's too far too much that fans signed a petition that ignores their values. I'm sure that Jungkook and other idols understand the responsibility and the risks involved in getting tattoos as a form of self-expression!

In recent years,  societies even in Korea and Japan have started to be more open-minded with freedom of thought and appearance. Accordingly, our attitude toward tattoos is changing, but it's still far from tolerant. Even if you don't think having tattoos is a good idea, you can't deny the idea of getting a tattoo or the person himself! I sincerely hope that Asian fans will be more tolerant of idols' tattoos in the future!

ARMYの人なら知っていると思いますが、メンバーのジョングクがここ最近でたくさんのタトゥーをいれましたよね！ これについては賛否両論ありますよねー。韓国アイドルにはタトゥーを入れている人もいますが、ジョングクは特に多く入れているため、反応が多かったのだと思います…

 

今回はジョングクのタトゥーの話もしながら、世界のタトゥーに対する価値観ついて紹介していきます！！

まず、タトゥーに肯定的な主な国々について見てみます。アメリカでは2013年度の調査によると40歳までの大人の40％がタトゥーを入れています。また、イギリスでもタトゥーに肯定的な視線でのCMがあったりします。ほかに、イタリアやオーストラリアなどもタトゥーについては寛容な姿勢であるようです。もっとも、こういった国々でさえ、ホワイトカラーなど職種や身分によってはタトゥーを入れたくない人、あまり肯定的に思わない人が少なくないというデータがあります。それでも、アジア各国に比べると欧米はかなりタトゥーに寛容と言えそうです。

韓国、日本、中国などではそうはいきません。中国ではタトゥーは法で禁止されていますし、韓国や日本では禁止はされていませんが、目立つものを入れている人は特殊と見られています。特にアジアではタトゥーをヤクザなどのガラの悪い人や犯罪者と結び付けがちであるため、いいイメージがないようです。実際日本で街を歩いていてもタトゥーを入れている人はあまり見かけません。日本でタトゥーのある人はプールや温泉に入れない場合があることも、日本社会のタトゥーに対する姿勢を表しています。

このようなことを念頭に入れたうえでグクのタトゥーについて考えます。まず、ブログ主のネットでの体感ではありますが、グクがタトゥーを入れていることを批判したり残念に思っているような英語のコメントはツイッターやYouTubeを見ていてもあまり見かけません。でもアジアのARMYの反応は違いました。グクがタトゥーを入れるのに反対する署名を始めたのは日本のARMYです。このようにタトゥーそのものに対する価値観の違いによってグクのタトゥーへの反応にもかなり差があるのです。

 

推しの見た目やイメージが急に変わることに困惑する気持ちはわかりますが、ファンがアイドルの意思を無視するような署名運動をするのは行き過ぎです。きっとグクもほかのアイドルも、その責任やリスクを理解した上で自己表現のためにタトゥーを入れていると思います。

最近は韓国や日本でも個人の考え方や嗜好、見た目についての自由が認められるようになってきています。タトゥーに対する姿勢も以前とは多少変わってきているのかもしれませんが、それでもまだ寛容とまでは言えません。自分が肯定的に思っていないとしても、タトゥーを入れる人の価値観やその人自身を否定するべきではないと思います。今後アジアのファンもアイドルのタトゥーにもっと寛容になってほしいと切に願っています！
