Criticism Floods over BTS Grammy Caricature BTSグラミー賞風刺画に批判殺到

BTS was nominated for the Grammys this year! Although they didn't win the award, they have become famous all over the world by the nomination and the performance. However, BTS's nomination triggered some issues related to the Grammy Awards. In this post, I'd like to introduce one of them.

Topps ”Garbage Pail Kids" Grammy-themed sticker collection had a picture that depicts BTS losing Grammy.

It's a picture of a whack-a-mole.The members of BTS are covered in scars being slapped by a Grammy trophy.At the bottom, it says "Bopping K-pop". As this picture is insulting and condescending to BTS, as well as Kpop and Asians, it got severe backlash from fans and Asians, such as "You can't call this a caricature to criticize the Grammy Awards in the first place. It's just racism" "BTS themselves accepted the fact that they didn't win the award and didn't say a single bad thing about the Grammy Awards, so it's unacceptable that they are the only ones being criticized."

Topps apologized and the card is no longer available.

I am really disgusted by seeing this picture. I’m offended to see my favorite idol being depicted in such an insulting way. In the first place, I don't like caricature itself that makes people look silly and grotesque.

We should respect freedom of speech and expression, but any racist elements in it are unacceptable. Even if they didn’t mean to be racist or offensive, producing this kind of cards is too insensitive when hate crimes against Asians are a growing problem.

今年のグラミー賞にBTSがノミネートされましたね！惜しくも受賞はしませんでしたが、このノミネートとパフォーマンスで彼らは世界に名を広めました。しかし、BTSのノミネートをきっかけにグラミー賞に関連する問題がいくつか起こりました。今回はそのうちの一つを紹介します。

Topps社の"Garbage Pail Kids"というトレーディングシールコレクションの絵柄に受賞を逃したBTSを描いたものがありました。

もぐらたたきの絵ですね。BTSのメンバーが傷だらけでグラミー賞のトロフィーにたたかれる風刺絵です。また、下には"Bopping K-pop"「Kpopをぶっ叩く」と書かれています。

グラミー賞を取れなかったことをバカにし、アジア人やKpopを見下しているとも受け取れる内容にファンからの非難が殺到しました。「そもそもこれはグラミー賞を批判する風刺画になっていない」「BTS本人たちは受賞できなかったことも受け入れてグラミーのこと一つも悪く言っていないのに彼らだけ批判されるのは許せない」

結果、Topps社は謝罪をし、このカードの発売は中止になりました。

私はこの絵を見て、不快になります。好きなアイドルがこのように風刺して描かれているのが悲しく、腹が立ちます。そもそも人をバカにしてグロテスクに見せるための風刺画という手法自体私はあまり好きではありません。

表現の自由は尊重されるべきで批判も自由だけれど、そこに人種差別的な要素が入ってはならないと思います。たとえ攻撃的な意図や人種差別的な意図はなかったとしても、アジア人へのヘイトクライムが問題になっている今、このようなカードを出すなんてあまりにも無神経すぎるのではないでしょうか…。
